Acetal is properly known as polyoxymethylene (POM). It is also know as polyacetal and polyformaldehyde. It is a semi-crystalline material providing a low coefficient of friction and strong wear properties – especially in wet environments. Due to acetal’s low moisture absorption, the physical properties of acetal remain constant in a wide variety of environments. It is a form of an engineering thermoplastics used in precision parts that require strength, high stiffness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability. Acetal is available in two grades and several blends. The two most common grades are Acetal Copolymer and Acetal Homopolymer. The main differences betweem the two is that Acetal C has better dimensional stability, particulary in high moisture enviroments, while Delrin has slightly higher compressive strength and is slightly more rigid. At Robertson Plastics, we stock Acetal Coplymer in both sheet and plate. Acetal H (Delrin) may be special ordered with short lead times.
